The theatre lies on the west side of Whitehall, just where the roadway narrows to enter Trafalgar Square. The theatre extends back to Spring Gardens, the site of famous 17th-century pleasure grounds, immortalized by Sir John Vanbrugh in his play The Provok’d Wife. Designed by Edward A. Stone In 1929-30, the building is fabricated in steel and reinforced concrete with the front and rear elevations faced In Portland stone. The front elevation, with its wide, triple-arched centre bay and narrow wings, is clean in a modernistic mode, quite out of step with its immediate surroundings. Adjacent on its north side Is a fine bank building of 1885 by George Altchison, while opposite the theatre is an array of excellent buildings including the Old Shades pub (1898), designed in a free Flemish-Gothic style by Treadwell and Martin, and Craigs Court, laid out in 1695; Its surviving mansion, originally backing on to the grounds of Northumberland House, was demolished in 1874 to make space for Northumberland Avenue.
Although Stone designed the envelope of the Whitehall, the theatre’s original name, the interiors are the work of Marc Henri and Gaston Laverdet, who collaborated with Stone at the Piccadilly Theatre (1928) and the Prince Edward Theatre (1930). At this peak of theatre-building activity In London, they had also, with Ewen S. Barr, designed the Duchess Theatre in Catherine Street (1929).
Under a modern canopy three pairs of armourglass doors give access to a satinwood-llned rectangular foyer which also selves as the circle bar. A glazed screen then opens Into the intimate auditorium, where the surface decoration can only be described as economical. The tympanum to the ribbed and angled proscenium arch contains a stylized mermaid emerging from a shell, and the overall geometry of this Germanic ‘architecture of light’ creation combines with a subtle scheme of concealed lighting to create a remarkable effect In this single-balcony, silver, red, gold and black space. The rectangular stalls bar, which continues the theme of the auditorium, is said to be based on a liner’s saloon, a reference to the romance of ocean travel in the 1930s. Restored with great care in 1985 by Ian Albury, the building selves as an object lesson in fabric conservation to owners of any British theatre.
Built by Walter Hackett for the staging of light comedy, the theatre has in fact been through a number of changes. In the early 1940s striptease queen Phyllis Dlxey featured in a series of saucy shows, followed by a run of farces. The 1950s and 1960s saw Brian Rix present wonderfully successful productions, including Dry Rot (1954) and Simple Spymen (1958). In 1961 Paul Raymond, better known for his Revue Bar, brought In the daring Pyjama Tops, starring Caroline Dudley, before unsuccessfully attempting to convert the theatre Into a tourist-oriented War Museum. In the hands of the Ambassadors Theatre Group the building has now been restored to its proper use.
In a manner much beloved by super-cinema entrepreneurs, although on a much reduced scale, In 2004/05 the theatre was divided by the forming of a 100-seat studio theatre underneath the circle, whose seating now drifts down to stalls level. As a business venture this may well be the way forward. The theatre was renamed Trafalgar Studios’.

1929-30. Designed by Edward A. Stone in collaboration with Marc Henri and Gaston Laverdet for Walter Hackett, seating 620 / 1930. Opens on 29 September / 2004. Studio 1 opens, seating 380 / 2005. Studio 2 opens, seating 100

Commentaire: Renowned for his inventive, contemporary reinterpretations of classic theatre and opera Adam Spreadbury-Maher, who is directing this time around, will focus upon the quintessential quartet - Mimi, Musetta, Rodolfo (Ralph) and Marcello (Mark) - and it will be lifted from when Puccini set his opera in the early 19th century to present day East London. The production will lay bare the dangerous and damaging effects of co-dependent relationships against a backdrop of spiralling rents and social media.  (plus)

Commentaire: Transferring after a sell-out, award-nominated run at Theatre503, Stuart Slade's BU21 follows six Londoners in the aftermath of a fictitious terrorist attack. In turn terrifying, inspiring, brutal, heart-breaking and hilarious, this is verbatim theatre from the very near future. Based on real testimonies gathered from a variety of terrorist incidents including the 7/7 bombings, 9/11, the Paris attacks and the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack, Slade’s BU21 is terrifyingly credible.  (plus)

Commentaire:

Presse: "McAvoy has tremendous, infectious fun as this charismatic holy fool, a role taken by Peter O’Toole in the 1972 film version. Eyes glinting with mischief, smiling beatifically, he takes Barnes’s luxuriantly freewheeling speeches at often breath-taking speed so that even when they jump the rails of sense, we’re still hooked." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"Lloyd’s production keeps the action flowing smoothly on Soutra Gilmour’s unitary set and, in a 14-strong cast, there are good performances from Anthony O’Donnell as a Marxist butler, Ron Cook as Jack’s vindictive uncle and Kathryn Drysdale as a false Marguerite Gautier..." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"James McAvoy returns for a second season to director Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar presentations. His Jack Gurney is by turns charming and even more chilling than his Macbeth here last season; his smile can charm you across a flowery meadow or make you resolve never to risk walking down a darkened alley with him." Ian Shuttleworth for The Financial Times

"James McAvoy’s charismatic performance is a tour de force." Henry Hitchings for Evening Standard

Commentaire:

Presse: "There is a sense of the production’s being slightly undercooked. Horrocks’s performance is as the redoubtable Ella is polished and Taj Atwal is sparky as Meenah, But Khan Din gives a curiously hesitant performance as George: both his violence and his charisma are oddly muted..." Jane Shilling for The Telegraph

"A lot has happened in the wake of 9/11 to make one wonder whether the equivalents of the Khan children now would more exercised about their identity. It hasn't dated the piece, though, which has prescient touches and is still brilliantly alive in its verbal comedy. A great night out." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"One of the great pleasures of the play is the way, whatever your cultural background, it tells the truth about family life and the way that love and hate are bound together." Lyn Gardner for The Guardian

"The grimmer scenes of domestic abuse seem contrived, and the production doesn’t always feel sharply focused. But any opportunity to see Horrocks onstage is a treat." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaire: Part of Trafalgar Transformed - 'a season of politically-charged power plays on the doorstep of Whitehall, accompanied by a festival of platform events, discussions and readings.'
Jamie Lloyd's production will see Shakespeare's darkest tale play out in a dystopian Scotland brutalised by war. Under a toxic fog, Macbeth begins his tormented struggle for power fuelled by ambition and paranoia.  (plus)

Presse: "Lloyd’s production, set in a post-apocalyptic Scotland which has been laid waste by war and climate change, packs a powerful punch...James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth...This is a gripping and genuinely startling production - and would be more effective still with a speedier running time. " Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph

" [James McAvoy] a gripping, no-holds-barred performance...For my taste, the production is a wee bit over-the-top but there are sequences where it achieves an extraordinary thematic penetration. " Paul Taylor for The Independent

"I’ve seen the role [Macbeth] played with more poetic subtlety but never with more energy." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Although it's a good occasion, there's a relentlessly visceral quality to Lloyd's production that eventually becomes a bit wearing." Michael Billington for The Guardian

Commentaire: This new version, with several new songs, was staged in the smaller Trafalgar Studio. In spite of the veteran Ellen Greene (the original Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors”) and Peter Duncan (of “Bamum” and “Blue Peter” fame) it was generally felt to be a self-indulgent piece of whimsy by Ian McFarlane, who wrote the music, lyrics and book as well as directing the show. The run was extended by three weeks, though Ellen Green left the cast on the originally announced closing date.  (plus)

Avec: Tracie Bennett (Judy Garland), Hilton McRae (Anthony), Stephen Hagen (Mickey Deans), Robin Browne

Commentaire: In February 2010 it was revived in Northampton with Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland and transferred to the Trafalgar Studios from November 16th (previews). Its enormous success and huge critical praise led to its West End run being extended to 21 May 2011, followed by a UK tour. The production then opened in Minneapolis in January 2012, and on Broadway on April 2 nd , 2012 (previews from March 19th). The American cast had Michael Cumpsty and Tom Pelphrey supporting Tracie Bennett.  (plus)

Presse: "Melancholy saga ...For all the skill of the acting and the smoothness of Terry Johnson's production, it's hard to love a play that invites us to wallow in Garland's tragic decline without offering much in the way of enlightenment." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"This is not so much a musical as a play with a lot of music woven into it...[Tracie] Bennett is superb." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Tracie Bennett gives a great performance as Garland...Only those who hope for anything more than the schmaltz of suffering will be disappointed." Ian Shuttleworth for The Financial Times

"Terry Johnson’s production is practically flawless. " Paul Vale for The Stage

"There are moments in the theatre when you lean forward in your seat with shivers racing down the spine, and realise there is nowhere on God’s earth you’d rather be. End of the Rainbow is one such occasion, offering one of the greatest musical theatre performances I have ever witnessed...At once fragile and funny, tragic and tough, and rising to superb musical heights, Bennett’s performance is as dazzling as it is unforgettable." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

Metteur en scène: Russell Labey •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Paul Holowaty, Gregg Lowe, Emma Rigby , Daniel Boys

Commentaire: The musical version by Russell Labey and Leon Parris had a four-night preview at the Tabard Theatre in Chiswick prior to opening at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009. The original cast included Paul Holowaty, Gregg Lowe and Lee Latchford-Evans from “Steps”. With just a few minor revisions, the production was re-staged for its premiere at the Trafalgar Studios, previewing from July 6th, and running until the end of the month. Large parts of the show were “sung-through” and the music was pre-recorded. Because two of the performers were leading players in TV’s “Hollyoaks” it attracted good business, but its homo-eroticism, and sado-masochistic themes, together with its graphic sex scenes, proved too much for the majority of the critics who found it offensive.  (plus)

Commentaire: With a cast of just nine in modem dress, all doubling as on-stage musicians, with the barber’s chair replaced with a black onstage coffin, with blood being poured from one bucket to another each time a person is killed - this was a very “different” interpretation of Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd. Originally produced at the Watermill Theatre, Berkshire, this limited run transfer divided the critics into two distinct camps. On the one hand: “superbly inventive”, “spectacular versatility”, “brilliantly expressive symbolic approach”; on the other, “the worst sort of university theatre, didactic, over-stylised ... crashingly obvious”, “cramped and inadequate”, “there are times when small is not beautiful”. In November 2005 John Doyle recreated this production on Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Director.  (plus)

Presse: FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "As sharp as ever...The versatility on offer is spectacular.."
PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Wonderfully fresh and fierce small-scale version."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "strong on melodramatic horror, low on social resonance."
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Superbly inventive staging."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Theatrical originality and a successful awakening of the audience’s imaginations."
SARAH HEMMIMG for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Sondheim's musical emerges here as keen as a razor."

Commentaire: Michael White, famous for “Rocky Horror Show” and “Oh Calcutta”, had apparently invested £1 million in this lavish “adult entertainment”. The publicity said that he hoped people would leave the theatre “wanting to have sex - with whatever and homever”. Inevitably the show was totally derided by the critics, claiming it offered not just simulated sex, but simulated singing, dancing and acting and a simulated book and music. It came off after 8 weeks having lost its entire investment.  (plus)

Larry Branson bore an uncanny resemblance to Roy Orbison and had toured the USA for several years in a tribute show. In May 1995 the cast was joined by P. J. Commentaire: The Blues Brothers never existed in real life: Con O’Neill & Warwick Evans were characters played by John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in the 1980 film of the same name. Over the years Belushi acquired posthumous cult status and the film itself inspired this spin-off. Neither a concert nor a performance, and rather oddly Anglicised so that it was emphatically a “tribute” to the Blues Brothers rather than a breach of any American copyright, the critics generally thought the backing chorus (The Bluettes) were the best thing about the show. However, audiences loved it, and the show ran for ten months before going on a UK and European tour. It then came back into the West End in September 1994.  (plus)
